Disney’s Live-Action ‘Snow White’ Is Tracking Towards a $65 Million Debut
Disney’s long-brewing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs remake is finally set to hit theaters on March 21, and now we have an early idea of how the film will fair at the box office.
Quorum (via Deadline) currently estimates that the Rachel Zegler-led film will debut somewhere between $63 and $70 million at the domestic box office. Such an opening would be below the $95 million that The Little Mermaid delivered over its debut weekend in 2023.

Looking at Disney’s other live-action remakes, Snow White would also fail to match the debut of Aladdin ($91.5 million), Beauty and the Beast ($174 million), or The Lion King ($191.7 Million).
A Modern Retelling of the Animated Classic
Starring Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot, and Andrew Burnap, Snow White will be a modern retelling of the classic Disney animated film.
“In the heart of a dark forest, the lovely young princess Snow White seeks sanctuary in a quaint cottage belonging to seven dwarfs, escaping the wrath of her envious stepmother, the wicked Queen,” the film’s synopsis reads.

“Consumed by vanity, the Queen, desperate to maintain her title as ‘fairest in the land,’ becomes increasingly threatened by Snow White’s unparalleled beauty, driving her to extreme measures to eliminate her stepdaughter.”
The Film Has Been Steeped in Controversy
Originally set to hit theaters last year, Snow White has been steeped in controversy almost since it was announced. The trouble started when actor Peter Dinklage accused Snow White of being a “backward story” due to its depiction of dwarfism.

In response to these accusations, Disney released a statement announcing that it would be “reimagining the dwarfs to avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original film.”
The studio’s response drew backlash from fans of the animated film and numerous other actors with dwarfism, who felt that Dinklage’s comments did not represent the entire community’s perspective.

Additionally, Zegler has continually found herself in hot water for her comments on the original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Disney Has Time to Ramp Up Anticipation
While Disney still has over a month to ramp up anticipation for Snow White, it does not look like the film will live up to even The Little Mermaid’s standards. With an estimated budget of $250 million, the film will likely have to make at least $500 million for Disney to break even.
It is important to remember, however, that the movie is still six weeks away.
