Disney’s Streaming Division Continues to Thrive, Even as Disney+ Loses 700,000 Subscribers
The Walt Disney Company has delivered its FY2025 first-quarter earnings report, and the quarter was a definitive success for Disney.
On a macro level, Disney managed to beat its expected earnings per share and just barely beat revenue expectations. You can read our full breakdown of the report here.

As expected, however, all eyes were on Disney’s streaming unit, which finally reached profitability last year. In 2025, Disney expects the segment to turn a profit of at least $875 million. So, how did they do last quarter?
Disney Streaming Beat Expectations
In the first quarter of 2025, Disney’s streaming unit posted an operating income of $293 million. That number puts the company on pace to beat its FY2025 projections. In total, the division delivered $6.07 billion in revenue.

Turning to subscriber count, Disney+ lost a net of 700,000 subscribers. That number was actually lower than Disney anticipated following last October’s price increase.

Hulu, meanwhile, surpassed expectations and gained 1.6 million subscribers. That gave Disney a net growth of 900,000 subscribers between the two services.
Its All About Profit
Once upon a time, Disney+ losing 700,000 subscribers would have caused panic at Disney. The company’s initial streaming strategy was to grow its subscriber count, regardless of the cost.

With a new focus on profitability, however, Disney’s streaming numbers were good, if not spectacular. While the Disney+ subscriber loss will grab headlines, Disney’s streaming division is doing exactly what the company wants it to. It is making money.
