Was ‘Bluey’ Your Holiday Babysitter?
Sometimes, I look at Disney’s streaming ratings, and nothing makes sense.
Then, we have instances like the latest batch of Nielsen ratings where I can tell exactly what happened.

So, come on. Just go ahead and admit it. Was Bluey your holiday babysitter during New Year’s?
Back to Bluey

I mostly sidestepped Bluey discussions over the past three months as if I’ve honestly run out of things to say.
How many different ways can I ask, “You all sure love ‘Bluey,’ don’t you?”

The answer is, of course, “YES!” I’ve seen it in the data for years now, but I still had to laugh at the latest Nielsen charts.
This batch covers the end of 2024 and the start of 2025, specifically December 30th, 2024, through January 5th, 2025.

That’s the time when parents made their New Year’s Eve plans and spent the start of 2025 wondering if it’d always be this cold.
Not coincidentally, Bluey’s ratings surged. Just a few weeks ago, the show had consistently fallen under one billion minutes.

Now, that’s still an impressive total, and Bluey is a remarkably reliable performer.
We just confirmed that Bluey was THE most-watched program on streaming last year.

Photo: Ludo Studios
For the year, Bluey averaged 1.069 billion viewer minutes each week, an almost incomprehensible total.
Please remember that the show’s episodes are typically seven minutes long.

So, people watched about eight billion Bluey episodes in calendar 2024.
That statistic breaks my brain. It’s like saying everyone on the planet watched a Bluey episode last year!

Disney didn’t miss this fact, as your favorite company just signed a comprehensive deal.
Thanks to this licensing agreement, we’ll meet Bluey characters at the various parks, resorts, and Disney cruise ships this year.

Bluey is here to stay, and it’s clearly what people want. To wit, people watched 1.235 billion minutes of Bluey for New Year’s.
And I know why. You all just stuck your kids in front of the television or handed them a tablet with Bluey on it, didn’t you?

Numbers don’t lie. I see you!
What Didn’t Chart?

Photo: Pexel.com
The latest chart tells a secondary story, other than you all using Bluey for cheap babysitting. I know you did. Stop pretending.
As soon as Christmas ended, people stopped streaming holiday movies. Well, most people did. I’m still all over them.

Photo: IMDb
On the previous Movies chart, we saw Disney streaming titles like Home Alone, Elf, and even Die Hard.
The only holiday movie at the start of 2025 is Red One, which was also a major theatrical release in November.

Red One
So, that film’s presence on the charts is more about recency than holiday content.
Everything else listed here is not holiday-related, and several titles were 2024 theatrical releases.

Wall Street Journal
Notably, nothing is animated, which is rather shocking based on recent events.
On Nielsen’s list of the ten most-streamed movies of 2024, the top nine titles were all animated.

Red One
The only live-action entry for 2024 was…Red One. So, it’s a bona fide hit on streaming after bombing in theaters.
Alas, Disney’s strong suit in the Movies category is animated titles. So, Disney didn’t have anything chart this week.

Image: Pixar
A few months ago, I would have described that as a rarity, but it’s happened more frequently lately.
The exceptions have been Inside Out 2 and Moana, the latter being the number one film of 2024.

As for Moana, it gained a bump due to heightened interest from Moana 2. But Moana doesn’t appear on the latest chart.
So, Disney takes the goose egg in this category and Originals as well.

Marvel
Last time, Marvel’s What If…? charted with 367 million. On the most recent chart, the animated series didn’t make the top ten.
Disney’s Other Streaming Hits

Families Streaming Disney+
I will add that the tenth-place finisher claimed 398 million viewer minutes.
What If would have needed to improve its ratings, which wasn’t likely due to its unique release pattern.

Fans could watch a new episode a day during Christmas Week. Thus, 2025 spillover wasn’t as likely.
Long story short, Disney’s only streaming hits this week were its ever-popular catalog titles and Bluey.

In fact, Disney didn’t even perform as well as usual on the Acquired chart. Here are the Disney titles in the top ten:
- Grey’s Anatomy – 1.05 billion minutes
- Bob’s Burgers – 912 million minutes
- Lost – 708 million minutes
- Family Guy – 674 million minutes

IMDB
Grey’s Anatomy and Bob’s Burgers performed slightly better than usual, while Lost was in its typical range.
Family Guy fell a bit this week, but it’s a bit less predictable than the others. So, I read nothing into that.

Still, I find it interesting that Disney just learned it had the top five Acquired shows of 2024 and seven of the top ten.
Then, during the first few days of 2025, fewer people watched Disney films and television shows.

This is probably just a holiday-related blip. It’s amusing that Disney won the streaming war in 2025 only to lose the first game of 2025, though.
