After the Demise of Venu Sports, Fox Announces Its Own Streaming Service
Just months after the company’s plan to partner with Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery for Venu Sports fell apart, Fox is preparing to enter the world of streaming on its own.
During today’s quarterly earnings call, CEO Lachlan Murdoch announced that Fox would launch a direct-to-consumer product that is expected to include sports and news content.

According to Murdoch, the company is finalizing the app design now, and further information will be forthcoming.
The Aftermath of Venu
To understand Fox’s latest announcement, we have to examine the wreckage of Venu.
Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery announced last year that they would launch a sports-centric streaming service to bring together the biggest stations in sports broadcasting.

Eventually dubbed Venu Sports, the streaming service was expected to launch last fall but was delayed after Fubo filed an antitrust lawsuit against the partners.
Earlier this year, Disney purchased a controlling stake in Fubo and announced that it would combine the service with Hulu + Live TV. Subsequently, the joint venture partners pulled the plug on Venu.
Fox Was Left in the Cold
Between Fubo/Hulu + Live TV and the upcoming direct-to-consumer ESPN streamer, Disney had little need for Venu. Similarly, Warner Bros. Discovery can distribute its sports content through Max.

While Fox has its own streaming services in Fox Nation and the ad-supported Tubi, it does not have a streaming home for its sports content. Thus, a new streamer is on the way.
What to Expect
According to Murdock, the company has “modest” expectations for the new streaming service’s subscriber count.
“We’re going to price the service accordingly,” he said.

Additionally, the goal is not to transition away from traditional cable.
“We’re huge supporters of the traditional cable bundle, and we always will be,” Murdoch said on Tuesday’s call. “But having said that, we do want to reach consumers wherever they are, and there’s a large population, obviously, that are now outside of the traditional cable bundle.”

Hopefully, we will learn more details about the streaming service soon.
