Disney VoluntEARS Bring Comfort to Kids Displaced by Los Angeles Wildfires
The devastating wildfires swept through the Los Angeles area, displacing families and causing terrifying destruction.
Disney VoluntEARS sprang into action, assembling hundreds of Disney-themed comfort kits and care packages for children staying in American Red Cross shelters. Their efforts brought smiles and relief to families facing immense challenges during this difficult time.
Disney Comfort Kits
The Disney Experiences team provided the comfort kits, which included coloring books, activity kits, plush toys, and more. The kits were intended to bring some Disney fun and a welcome distraction to children in the shelters.
Additional boxes were filled with books, games, blankets, and chairs. These items were delivered to enhance the children’s space at the Pasadena shelter.
“If there’s one company that can bring a smile to somebody’s face when they’re going through their most difficult time, it’s Disney,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences. “You look at operations like this, where Cast Members are coming together, everyone wants to reach out and help. And that’s what we’re here to do.”
Hope and Comfort with the Red Cross
Disney’s partnership with the American Red Cross is looking at additional ways to uplift families. Future offerings include game nights and potential Disney movie screenings at shelters.
“I’m deeply grateful for Disney’s unwavering support of our mission and their generous commitment to helping those in need,” said Cliff Holtz, president and CEO of the American Red Cross.
“Just last week, I was able to connect with Bob Iger when he visited an American Red Cross shelter in Pasadena. I can’t thank the Disney team enough for standing with us to bring hope and comfort in the wake of these devastating wildfires.”
Coming Together
The initiative highlights Disney’s culture of volunteering and community involvement; it is just one way they support the community.
“The Disney VoluntEARS came together at a moment’s notice to help us compile these comfort kits and care packages,” said Karen Kawanami, Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility for Disney Experiences. “They care so much about the communities and the nonprofits that Disney works with.”
John Breckow, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, noted that many departments came together and shared, “We have Mickey Krispie treats from Disneyland, and we have coloring books from Disney Consumer Products,” he said.
“Our employee base has such a strong sense of community, of giving back. Frankly, that’s why I work here.”
Disney’s Continuing Support
Earlier this month, Disney pledged $15 million in aid to help the community, including support for the American Red Cross. In addition, Disney recently opened its wardrobe warehouse to assist employees and families affected by the fires with clothing and accessories.
Through acts of kindness and collaboration like these, Disney VoluntEARS continues to embody the company’s mission of bringing magic and hope to those in need.
