‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Reigns Supreme at the Box Office; Closes in on $600 Million
While Moana 2 was last weekend’s big winner at the box office, sailing past the $1 billion threshold, Disney’s latest blockbuster also delivered strong results.
Mufasa: The Lion King continued its extended run in theaters, grossing another $11.9 at domestic theaters and $20.3 million internationally. Through Sunday, the film has now grossed $205.8 million at North American theaters and $382.2 million overseas, for a global cume of $588 million.

‘Mufasa’s’ Comeback
After getting lapped by Sonic the Hedgehog 3 over their debut weekend, Mufasa has come roaring back.
When the film opened to a tepid $35 million in its first weekend in theaters, many began to worry about Mufasa’s prospects. However, once the movie cleared Christmas, it was off to the races.

Propelled forward by strong audience reviews and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s viral soundtrack, Mufasa has delivered the kind of extended box office run that Disney was surely hoping for.
Another Disney Box Office Success
Based on its $200 million budget, Mufasa likely needed to gross at least $500 million to turn a profit. That number has proven to be no problem for the film, which is now closing in on $600 million.

If Mufasa can keep its momentum going for a bit longer, the film has a real shot of ending its box office run around the $700 million threshold. While that number is a far cry from the $1.65 billion that 2019’s The Lion King delivered, it would be a roaring success for Mufasa.
Will There Be Another ‘Lion King’ Film
As Mufasa winds down its box office run, all eyes have turned to the future of The Lion King franchise. While Disney has yet to announce that another film is in the works, the Mufasa turnaround has made such an announcement more likely.
Perhaps Disney will turn the spotlight to Billy Eicher and Seth Rogan’s Timon and Pumbaa and develop a Lion King 1 1/2 remake.

They could also shift the franchise’s focus to Blue Ivy Carter’s Kiara and follow the adventure of The Lion King 2.
