Dick Vitale’s Return to ESPN Delayed After Fall
Dick Vitale’s triumphant return to ESPN following his cancer treatments has been delayed.
The legendary college basketball analyst had been set to return to the broadcast booth next Saturday for the ACC matchup between Duke and Wake Forest.
Unfortunately, Vitale suffered a fall this weekend and will be unable to return. Thankfully, the NCAA legend is expected to make a full recovery.

“I’m devastated that I won’t be courtside with my ESPN buddy Dave O’Brien and with all the players and fans, especially because of the overwhelming response I received when news of my planned return was announced,” Vitale told ESPN. “I was anxiously awaiting the chance to feel the excitement and energy of a college basketball environment for the first time in nearly two years.”
Vitale Has Had Four Recent Battles With Cancer
Perhaps the most famous college basketball announcer ever, Vitale announced that he was cancer-free last month after his fourth battle with the disease.
The broadcaster was initially diagnosed with melanoma in the summer of 2021. Months later, he received a subsequent diagnosis of lymphoma.

After returning to ESPN in the fall of 2021, Vitale had to step away from broadcasting to undergo surgery on his vocal cords.
In 2023, he revealed that the cancer had reached his vocal cords. It would later also spread to his lymph nodes.

“I’m sorry that unable to post about sports. But I’m recovering from a tough fall & being kept active at the hospital,” Vitale posted on X. “Good news is the neurosurgeons have said I am making great strides & surgery not necessary. So sorry that I can’t get at courtside as was planned.”

A hallmark for ESPN since the network launched in 1979, Vitale has become synonymous with college basketball. Hopefully, Dickie V heals up and returns to the booth soon.
