You probably hear about the people who finish first during the runDisney races, but have you ever wanted to hear about those who finish last? Well, we’re here to tell you about them!
Behind-the-Scenes of runDisney — The Bike Unit
Okay, we’re not actually talking about the participants who cross the finish line last during the runDisney races, we’re talking about a special unit known as the bike patrol! Disney shared a behind-the-scenes look at what the special unit does during the races.
During every single runDisney race, the bike patrol keeps a 16-minute mile for all the runners so that the race can be completed on schedule and the theme parks can open on time. Their goal is to guide and support runners every step of the way and ensure that everyone finishes strong!
Disney shared a special look at Christine, a 25-year runDisney cast member who has helped lead the bike team for over 17 years! Her team gets together at midnight on race day to cheer on the runners from the start line.

They’re all decked out in their safety gear which includes bright helmets and reflective safety vests.
As race time gets closer, they all get on their bikes and hit the course! They help runners who need reuniting with their families at the finish area as well as offer words of encouragement to those who are struggling.

“We never really know their complete story—maybe it’s their first race, their last, or maybe they’re running in honor of a loved one, or after recovering from an illness,” said Christine. “Knowing we played a part in helping them accomplish their goal, no matter what it is, is priceless.”
Christine said one of her favorite memories is from a runner who participates in runDisney races for years. He often fell behind the pace requirement and when the bike team recognized him, they encouraged him all the way to the finish line!

He later shared that the strength he gained from runDisney races helped him survive a five-organ transplant. Against all odds, he completed the race!
One of the bike team’s favorite parts of the runDisney races is being able to see guests cheering on the final finishers. The energy near the finish line is awesome and gives everyone a boost so they can finish the race strong!

“I still get giddy riding my bike down Walt Disney World’s Main Street, U.S.A. It never fails, there are always tears as we watch the joy of our runners finishing the race,” said Christine.
During Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, Christine rides over 65 miles between all four races — wow!

The bike unit is just one of many roles that goes into supporting the runDisney marathon weekend. For the full event, around 50 cast members work to get runners back to their families at the finish line.
This includes the bike team, cast members driving vans and buses, and a team in the parking lot tent ensuring runners receive their medals and race items.

Overall, the bike team is about helping every runner hit their goals, cross the finish line, and make their dreams come true. They will do whatever it takes to keep you going, from clearing obstacles out of your way to handing out sweet treats to keep you motivated.
