‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Roars Past $500 Million at the Global Box Office
Mufasa: The Lion King once again led the pack at the global box office this weekend, bringing in another $41 million, as the film’s comeback story continued.
Breaking that number down, Mufasa grossed $27.9 from 52 international markets and $13.1 million domestically.
As a quick recap, Mufasa was released on December 20, 2024. Coming out of the gate, the film was quickly lapped by Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which ran circles around The Lion King prequel over their debut weekend.

After Christmas, however, Mufasa has come roaring back, besting Sonic over New Year’s Day and beating the speedy hedgehog over the past two weekends.
‘Mufasa’ Crosses $500 Million
Mufasa: The Lion King has now grossed $540 million at the global box office, $189 million of which came from domestic theaters.
While Mufasa’s run is a far cry from the historic success of 2019’s The Lion King, the film has made a respectable showing in theaters. By crossing the $500 million mark, Mufasa will also now make Disney money.
Disney Remains King of the Box Office
Even though Mufasa will not reach the heights of its 2024 Disney peers, Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Moana 2, all of which will have crossed the $1 billion threshold when Moana sails past the mark this week, the film can now be deemed “successful.”

After dominating the box office last year, Disney did not need Mufasa to be a historic hit. Instead, they needed to keep their momentum going into the new year.

Following its slow start, Mufasa has come roaring back. Now, Disney can turn its attention to its jam-packed 2025 slate.
