Disney Faces Lawsuit for ‘Moana 2’
by Kristin Sabol · January 11, 2025
While Hollywood is getting ready to announce the nominations for the Academy Awards, Disney is dealing with its own movie drama—a lawsuit alleging that Moana and Moana 2 were stolen from another screenplay.
New Lawsuit
Animator Buck Woodall filed a lawsuit this past Friday in California Federal Court, claiming Disney copied elements from his original screenplay, Bucky.
Similarities include Polynesian backgrounds, young characters defying parental expectations, and journeys with spiritual encounters. Additional elements include a symbolic necklace, a demigod with tattoos and a hook, and a main character beginning their adventure with a turtle. These similarities were found in all of the screenplays.
Woodall previously sued Disney over Moana, but the case was dismissed due to timing. However, the release of Moana 2 gave him grounds to sue again.
Woodall also alleges that Disney had access to his work through Mandeville Films, which shared office space with Disney when his materials were submitted.
Disney Allegations
Disney has denied the allegations, affirming the film was created independently and not stolen from another source.
The studio has also provided extensive documentation, including research and development materials, to support its defense.
Moana 2 has enjoyed immense success, breaking box office records and delighting fans. The sequel debuted at $224.2 million at the box office, crushing records on its way to the biggest five-day opening in history. The original grossed at least $687 million worldwide.
Despite the legal issues, fans, young and old, remain captivated by Moana’s story.
