James Mangold Wants Nothing to Do With the Skywalker Saga: “You Can’t Please Anybody”
As speculation continues about the status of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey Skywalker film, it is appearing more and more likely that James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi film will follow The Mandalorian & Grogu on the Lucasfilm release schedule.
Originally announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023, Mangold’s film will explore the origin of the Force and tell the story of the first Jedi.
“When I first started talking to Kathy [Kennedy] about doing one of these pictures, what occurred to me was thinking about what kind of genre of movie within Star Wars I wanted to do,” Mangold previously explained.

“And I thought about a biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments, about the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from, when did we discover it, when did we learn how to use it?”
Mangold Wanted His Own Era to Explore
Following the release of his Bob Dylan biopic. A Complete Unknown, it now looks like Mangold will be able to entirely turn his attention to a galaxy far, far away.
In a recent interview with MovieWeb, however, the director explained that he did not want to be handcuffed by the massive amount of lore surrounding the Skywalker Saga.

“The ‘Star Wars’ movie would be taking place 25,000 years before any known ‘Star Wars’ movies takes place,” he said.
“It’s an area and a playground that I’ve always [wanted to explore] and that I was inspired by as a teenager. I’m not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it’s almost immovable. You can’t please anybody.”
When Will the Film Hit Theaters?
While Lucasfilm has not given any updates on when Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi film will hit theaters, with Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker movie dealing with yet another setback, Mangold could be up next.

In fact, late last year, rumors began to swirl that filming on Dawn of the Jedi could begin for next year.
For now, however, we will have to wait and see.
