‘Fireman Rob’ To Tackle This Weekend’s Walt Disney World Marathon Dopey Challenge in Full Firefighter Gear
Alongside thousands of other runners, Robert Verhelst is preparing to tackle the Dopey Challenge at this weekend’s 2025 Walt Disney World Marathon.
Unlike his peers, however, Verhelst will be running in full firefighter gear.

Known throughout the world as Fireman Rob, Verhelst has inspired millions by completing marathons, triathlons, and Iron Man events in his thirty-five-pound firefighter gear.
Rob’s Story
A 25-year firefighter in Madison, Wisconsin, Fireman Rob has made it his mission to raise awareness around mental health and let others know that they are not alone.
Verhelst traveled to Ground Zero following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, to help with search and rescue. Following the tragic event, the firefighter explained that he felt “lost.”

However, in 2011, he found his purpose when he began running marathons wearing his firefighter gear. Since then, he has competed in hundreds of events, broken two Guinness World Records, and inspired millions with his perseverance.
Even a recent knee replacement has not slowed him down.
Tackling the Walt Disney World Marathon
This weekend, Rob will compete in the Walt Disney World Marathon, where he plans to complete the Dopey challenge. To achieve his goal, he will run 48.6 miles through all four Walt Disney World theme parks!

In doing so, Rob hopes to raise awareness and support the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida.
“I have a lot of great sponsors that support the mission and the message,” he explained to Fox 51.

“One of the biggest things for me is having people be a part of something bigger than themselves…To be able to be that message of hope and be that message of inspiration for others, to find their possible.
A Little Extra Magic
As a self-proclaimed “Disney kid,” Rob says this upcoming marathon will be extra special.
“Being able to go there, is like being able to take yourself away to something inspirational, and just you go to a different world,” he said.
