A ‘Holes’ TV Series Is Coming to Disney+
According to a report from Variety, Disney+ has ordered a pilot for a new television series based on Louis Sachar’s 1998 book Holes.
Twenty-two ago, Disney released a film version of Holes starring Shai LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver, Khleo Thomas, Jon Voight, Tim Blake Nelson, Patricia Arquette, and Dule Hill. The film was a hit, grossing $70 million.
Now, the studio is ready to head back to Camp Green Lake.
“In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose,” the show’s synopsis reads.
The Team Behind the Series
The upcoming Holes series will be written by Alina Mankin, who will also serve as executive producer. Liz Phang will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Drew Goddard will executive produce along with Sarah Esberg through his Goddard Textiles.
In an interview with Variety, Goddard explained that his mother suggested Holes to him in the late 1990s.
“My mom’s been a schoolteacher for her whole life and, as such, she’s served as a de facto book scout for Goddard Textiles,” he explained. “She always knows what ‘the kids’ are into long before everyone else does. ‘Holes’ was the first book she suggested to me – this was back in the late ‘90s – and she was positive it was going to be a phenomenon. It feels good to bring it full circle for Mrs. Goddard and her sixth-grade class.”
As for what fans can expect from the new series, Goddard was mum.
“They’ve done a wonderful job capturing Louis Sachar’s unique spirit,” he added. “To say much more about what they have in store would spoil all the fun.”
Disney Has Found Success With Young Adult Series
Having found success with Goosebumps and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, it is clear that Disney believes Holes could be another young adult hit on streaming. At this time, however, there is no word on when the series will debut.
