‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Wins the Weekend and Heads Towards Profitability
As expected, Mufasa: The Lion King reigned supreme at the box office this weekend, finally besting Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
According to Exhibitor Relations Co., Disney’s latest blockbuster made another $23.8 million at domestic theaters this weekend, beating Sonic by roughly $2.7 million.

While the weekend win was expected, Mufasa’s strong weekend is just the latest win for the Disney film in what is becoming a significant pattern.
‘Mufasa’s’ Comeback
After stumbling out of the gate, Mufasa has come roaring back. The film has now grossed $168.8 million at North American theaters.

When the film got off to a slow start, detractors were quick to write the movie off. Since that time, however, Mufasa has won the Christmas window, roared on New Year’s Day, and now has continued its comeback through 2025
The Film Roared Overseas
Interanationally, Mufasa also kept its momentum going this this weekend.

Overseas, the film made another $53.1 million, bringing its foreign total to $307.8.
Looking at the the big picture, Mufasa has now grossed a global total of $476 million. If you have been reading along here at MickeyBlog, you know that the film needs to gross at least $500 million to reach profitability.

That now seems like a certainty.
Another Success For Disney
While Mufasa was not the overwhelming success that Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Moana 2 were, the film will make Disney money. After its slow start and middling critical reviews, that is a win in and of itself.

With limited competition on the horizon and strong audience scores, Mufasa should be able to continue strong through January. For Disney, the film has delivered a perfect start to 2025.
