How Far Will ‘Moana 2’ Go?
While much attention has been paid to the current battle between Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at the box office, Moana 2 has quietly been sailing ahead.
Last weekend, the highly-anticipated sequel to 2016’s Moana raced past the $450 million mark at the foreign box office, grossing another 36.1 million from overseas markets. The film has now grossed $882.5 million globally and has a real chance at becoming Disney’s third $1 billion film of 2024.

According to Deadline, the top five markets for Moana 2 have been France ($53.9M), UK ($42.6M), Germany ($34.8M), Mexico ($28.2M) and Brazil ($25.7M).
Another 2024 Disney Blockbuster
As things stand, Moana 2 is currently the fourth highest-grossing film of 2024, behind only Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Despicable Me 4. Overall, the film is the 80th highest-grossing film of all time.

Notably, Moana 2 has now outgrossed its predecessor by nearly $240 million.
Leading up to the release of Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the prevailing notion was that Moana 2 would taper off.

So far, however, the film has fought against the current and managed to keep sailing forward.
Will ‘Moana 2’ Reach $1 Billion?
The big question surrounding Moana 2 is whether the film will follow in the footsteps of Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine to become Disney’s third $1 billion grossing film of 2024. After delivering a strong fifth weekend in theaters, the threshold appears to be within reach.

While it remains to be seen whether or not the film can pass the $1 billion, Moana 2 has already been a triumph for Disney. Now, the only question is how far it will go.
