Disney Crosses the $5 Billion Barrier at the Box Office For the First Time Since 2019
While the release of Mufasa: The Lion King has not been the wild success Disney hoped for, the film’s $122 million global opening has propelled Disney to a stunning milestone.
Buoyed by blockbusters including Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Moana 2, Walt Disney Studios has become the first studio to cross the $5 billion mark at the global box office this year.

Of the $5.06 billion the studio has ranked in this year, $2.054 billion came from North America, while $3.006 billion came from overseas.
A Triumphant Return For Disney
After a difficult 2023 at the box office that saw films such as Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The Marvels, and Wish bomb, Disney came roaring back in 2024.

The year started off strong with the successful release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. From there, Disney delivered the highest-grossing animated film of all time (Inside Out 2), the highest-grossing R-rated film ever (Deadpool & Wolverine), and the widely successful Moana 2.

With the release of Mufasa: The Lion King, Disney became the only studio to cross the $5 billion mark this year, and it also marks the fifth time that Disney has reached the mark since 2010. The last time that Disney managed to cross the threshold was in 2019.
A Bright Future Ahead
With a stacked slate of releases in 2025 that includes Lilo & Stitch, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Zootopia 2, and Avatar: Fire and Ash, Disney will look to keep their momentum going as the new year approaches.
With today’s achievement, however, it is clear that Disney is once again king of the box office.
