Disney Celebrates 30 Years of ‘The Lion King’
As crazy as it seems, it has been 30 years since Disney’s The Lion King stampeded into theaters, laying the foundation for one of the most successful franchises in movie history.
For the past three decades, the story of Simba, Mufasa, Timon, and Pumbaa has been engrained in our collective consciousness as new generations of fans have fallen in love with The Lion King’s cast of characters.

During this time, Disney expanded the franchise in different directions, bringing The Lion King story to the theater, Disney+, and the Disney Parks. Along the way, we met new characters, learned more about the old, and further found our place in the Circle of Life.
A Broadway Sensation
The Lion King debuted on Broadway in 1997 and has never looked back. The show is now in its 27th year on Broadway and has collected six Tony Awards.

“The Lion King is probably the most successful musical ever to be launched around the world,” Thomas Schumacher, Chief Creative Officer of Disney Theatrical Productions, said. “29 different productions, 24 countries, every continent except Antarctica.”
Enter ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’
As Disney continues to celebrate The Lion King’s 30 anniversary, the next chapter in the franchise will unfold tomorrow when Mufasa: The Lion King hits theatres.
The upcoming film, directed by Barry Jenkins, uses cutting-edge digital technology to return fans to the Pride Lands, where they will learn more about the origin story of Mufasa, the future king.

“The thing that The Lion King does that I think makes it translatable across cultures, across language barriers, is this honesty of the way it deals with the human condition,” Jenkins said.
Place in the Parks
While The Lion King has long had a presence in the Disney Parks (shout to all the Legend of the Lion King and Circle of Life: An Environmental Fable fans out there), the franchise continues expanding its presence.

In fact, earlier this year, Disney announced that a new Lion King ride-through attraction was coming to Disneyland Paris!
Disney takes franchises to completely new levels, and it allows us to think about the success of these franchises in generations,” Emily Kaplan, Franchise Planning Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering, said. “I think that’s what differentiates us and really sets us apart.”

Guests can follow Simba’s journey from cub to king when the first-ever attraction inspired by Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “The Lion King” debuts at Disney Adventure World in Paris.
With Mufasa: The Lion King set to hit theaters and new generations discovering the original story on Broadway and Disney+, it looks like the best is yet to come for The Lion King franchise.
