Disney Is Developing a Live-Action ‘Tangled’ — Here’s What We Know

When Sean Bailey exited Walt Disney Pictures earlier this year, the prevailing notion was that the studio may be done with live-action remakes.

The executive’s departure, combined with the middling results of The Little Mermaid and the disastrous production of Snow White, led many to assume that Disney would pivot away from remakes and perhaps continue to lean into original films and sequels.

As it turns out, that was not the case.

Disney Has Continued to Mine Its Animated Canon

In the aftermath of Bailey’s departure, Disney has leaned into its upcoming Lilo & Stitch remake, deciding to give the film a theatrical release. Additionally, we have seen progress continue on the live-action Moana film set to be released in 2026, and the studio has been developing a live-action Prince Charming movie.

Now, the studio is getting ready to give another one of its popular animated films a live-action treatment.

A Live-Action ‘Tangled’ Is in the Works

According to a report from Variety, Disney is developing a live-action remake of 2010’s Tangled, with The Greatest Showman filmmaker Michael Gracey in talks to direct.

At this time, no cast for the film has yet to be announced. Jennifer Katin Robinson, who wrote Thor: Love and Thunder, is working on the script.

Disney Doubles Down

While Disney has struggled recently with its live-action remakes, once upon a time, not so very long ago, live-action adaptations of Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King were massive successes.

Subsequently, COVID-19 sidetracked Cruella and Mulan, while The Little Mermaid largely failed to hold water.

With live-action adaptations of Lilo & Stitch, Snow White, Moana, and now Tangled on the horizon, it is clear that Disney believes audiences will turn out again for reimagined versions of their favorite films.
