‘Moana 2’ Sails Past the $600 Million Mark; Closes in on ‘Moana’s’ Lifetime Gross
After just over two weeks in theaters, Moana 2 has officially passed the $600 million mark and is now the sixth highest-grossing film of 2024.
Originally developed as a streaming series, Moana 2 failed to receive the same critical reviews as its predecessor. Currently, the film holds a 62% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a far cry from the 96% approval rating of the first Moana film.

Despite its middling critical reviews, audiences have turned out in droves for Moana 2 and have liked what they saw.
‘Moana 2’ Got Off To A Historic Start
Upon its debut in theaters, the film quickly delivered the second-best day at the domestic box office of 2024, the best Thanksgiving Day ever, and the best Black Friday. By the time the dust had settled, Moana also had the best five-day opening of all time.
this weekend, Moana 2 added another $52 million to its domestic box office total. Overseas, the film brought in an additional $103.5 million.

Overall, Moana 2 now sits just $43 million behind the lifetime gross of the first Moana film.
How Far Will ‘Moana 2’ Go?
The big question surrounding Moana 2 is whether it has the legs to catch Inside Out 2 and become the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The Pixar blockbuster ended its box office run earlier this year with a lifetime gross of $1.673 billion.

While Moana 2 has proven that it is more than just a flash in the pan, it looks unlikely to reach the heights of Inside Out 2. The family film market will be increasingly crowded with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King set to hit theaters on December 20.

Nevertheless, Moana 2 now looks almost certain to reach the $1 billion mark, making it the third straight Disney film to cross that barrier. Disney is once again the king of the box office.
