Disney Is Not Ruling Out a Return of Johnny Depp to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’
By the sound of things, Captain Jack Sparrow may set sail again after all.
In a new report from Variety, a source close to the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie said, “Nothing has been ruled out ” regarding Johnny Depp’s possible involvement in the next Pirates film.

As a quick recap, Disney is currently in the midst of a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot that will seemingly include a sixth installment from Jerry Bruckheimer and the long-awaited Margot Robbie Pirates film.
Two ‘Pirates’ Films
The last time we checked in, Bruckheimer gave a surprising update that both films were in development.
“It’s two different movies,” Bruckheimer explained. “We hope to get ’em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too.”

When discussing a potential Pirates of the Caribbean 6, Bruckheimer noted that the film was being written by Jeff Nathanson, who also wrote 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales.
“I think he’s cracked it,” Bruckheimer said. “He’s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we’ll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act.”

The biggest question surrounding Pirates 6, however, was Depp’s potential involvement.
Depp Was Fired Following Domestic Assault Allegations
Following the release of Dead Men Tell No Tales, Disney seemed intent on continuing the franchise around Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow.
When the actor was accused of domestic violence by his ex-wife Amber Heard, however, things quickly changed. Disney unceremoniously threw Depp overboard and distanced themselves from the beleaguered actor. Instead, Disney was seemingly turning to Robbie to captain the franchise.

Subsequently, however, Depp won a very public defamation case against Heard. Throughout the trial, Depp’s legal team portrayed the actor as a victim, not only of Heard but also of an overly zealous Hollywood that was quick to proclaim the actor guilty.
During the examination, Depp testified that he learned he was fired from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise through a news article.
“I didn’t quite understand how after that long relationship, and quite a successful relationship certainly for Disney, that suddenly I was guilty until proven innocent.” Depp testified.

Furthermore, during the trial, Depp was asked under oath, “The fact is, Mr. Depp, if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film? Correct?”
“That is true, Mr. Rottenborn,” Depp responded.
Hope Springs Eternal
As they say, however, time heals all wounds. It now sounds like Disney could consider bringing Depp back into the fold.

While it remains to be seen if a reconciliation is on the horizon, there is seemingly at least a chance.
