Disney+ Drama Sparks Controversy and Lawsuit
The 9-part FX series Say Nothing, streaming on Disney+ and showing in the UK, has sparked legal action over its portrayal of historical events during the Troubles.
The drama, based on Patrick Radden Keefe’s book, features the infamous 1972 murder of Jean McConville, an innocent mother abducted and killed by the IRA and later buried in a secret grave.
Marian Price, 70, a veteran Republican also known as Marian McGlinchey, has announced plans to sue Disney+ for the way she is depicted in the series.
Lack of Evidence
Price’s legal team asserts that the show unjustly links her to McConville’s murder despite a lack of evidence.
“Our client has been publicly connected with the murder of the innocent mother Jean McConville,” said Peter Corrigan, Price’s solicitor at Phoenix Law. “This allegation is unfounded in all respects.”
Corrigan claims the dramatized scene was created for “theatrical elaboration,” adding that Price was never arrested for the crime due to insufficient evidence.
He further criticized the series for prioritizing streaming success over accuracy, calling the allegations “odious” and harmful.
This legal action has reignited a debate about the ethical responsibilities of historical dramas. Critics, including McConville’s family, have labeled the portrayal of her murder as “cruel” and “horrendous.”
Disney+ has yet to respond to the controversy.
