Disney Celebrates as ‘Moana 2’ Continues to Break Box Office Records

Disney has a lot to be thankful for this week after Moana 2 made quite the splash at the box office.

If you have been reading along here at MickeyBlog, you know that we have been closely following Moana’s latest adventure.

The highly anticipated sequel got off to a strong start on Wednesday, delivering the second-best day at the box office this year. After the hot start, it was smooth sailing for Moana 2.

Moana’s Historic Box Office Run

The film subsequently set a record for the highest-grossing Thanksgiving Day ever and followed that up with a record-breaking Black Friday.

Now that the dust has settled, Disney has reported that Moana 2 has made $221 million since opening, giving the film the highest 5-day opening of all time. To claim the title, Moana 2 breezed past last year’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which made $204.6 million in its first five days.

Additionally, Moana 2 crushed Frozen’s $94 million opening in 2013 to deliver the biggest Thanksgiving opening weekend. Finally, the film crushed Frozen 2’s $125 million second weekend in 2019 to secure the highest 5-day Thanksgiving run ever.

Disney is now responsible for the top seven opening Thanksgiving weekends of all time and nine out of the top ten.

Disney Celebrates Moana’s Success

After Moana 2′s historic start at the box office, Disney took some time to celebrate.

“Moana 2 has far surpassed our high expectations this weekend and is a testament to the phenomenon that Moana has become,” said Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment.

This is a moment to celebrate, and we’re thankful to all the moviegoers and fans who’ve helped make this a record-breaking debut.”

How Far Will ‘Moana 2’ Go?

Just five days after hitting theaters, Moana 2 has now grossed $386 million at the global box office.

All eyes will not be on the film as Moana 2 charts a course forward. By the looks of things, the film has a real chance to supplant Inside Out 2 as the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
