‘Moana 2’ Gets Off to a Record-Breaking Start at the Box Office
Moana 2 officially sails into theaters today, and the film is already making a splash.
According to a new report from Deadline, the highly anticipated sequel to 2016’s Moana will bring home $12 million in previews today, shattering Dinsey’s record for the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
The previous record was $3.8 million by 2018’s Ralph Breaks the Internet.

Currently, Moana 2 is expected to earn between $125 and $135 million at the domestic box office over its first five days in theaters. If the film can deliver, it would break the Thanksgiving box office record set by Frozen II.
Disney Hopes to Redeem Thanksgiving
For decades, Disney has released its biggest films over Thanksgiving. The extended opening weekend has helped propel films such as Frozen, Toy Story 2, Coco, Tangled, and the first Moana film to box office success.
In recent years, however, Disney’s Thanksgiving releases have been a disaster. Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney released Strange World to theaters over Thanksgiving 2022. The film was largely dead on arrival, making just $18.6 million over its first five days.

Last year, Disney released Wish, which promptly also bombed. The film, which was supposed to be the culmination of 100 years of Disney storytelling, made just $31.7 million over its first five days.
A Return to Form For Disney
After a disappointing 2023, Disney has returned to the top of the box office with a vengeance this year. After the historic box office success of Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine earlier this year, the studio looks like it has another blockbuster on its hands with Moana 2.

With the film off to a record start, all eyes will be on the second Moana film to see how far it can go.
