WATCH: The First Trailer For Pixar’s ‘Elio’ Has Arrived
After the historic success of Inside Out 2 earlier this year, Pixar will look to keep the good times rolling in 2025 with Elio.
The long-awaited original film will tell the story of Elio, an eleven-year-old boy who is mistakenly identified by aliens as Earth’s ambassador.
“In Pixar Animation Studios’ big-screen comedic misadventure, alien-obsessed Elio discovers the answer to that question when he is transported to the Communiverse, an interplanetary paradise that is home to intelligent life from galaxies far and wide,” the film’s synopsis reads.

“But when he’s mistaken as Earth’s leader, he’ll have to form unexpected bonds, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions and make sure he doesn’t lose the opportunity to live out his ultimate dream.”
Production on the Film Has Been Troubled
Originally announced in September 2022, Elio was initially set to be released on March 1, 2024. At the time, Pixar revealed that the film would be helmed by Coco director Adrian Molina. American Ferrera and Yonas Kibreab were also announced as the voices of Olga Solis and her son Elio.
However, in October 2023, the film was delayed. At the time, Pixar COO Pete Docter revealed that the delay was due in part to last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike. It was also delayed, however, because of creative changes at the studio.

On June 14, 2024, Docter further revealed that Turning Red director Domee Shi was replacing Molina as the director of Elio. Star America Ferrara also left the project and was eventually replaced by Zoe Saldana. As a result of the casting change, Olga was rewritten as Elio’s aunt, not his mother.

Joining Kibreab and Saldana in the film will be Remy Edgerly as Gordon, Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, and Jameela Jamil as Ambassador Questa. Shirley Henderson as stars as OOOOO.
