Simon Kinberg Is Set to Write and Produce a NEW ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy
In what can only be described as a galaxy-shaking development, Deadline reports that X-Men alum Simon Kinberg is developing a new Star Wars trilogy.
Mike Fleming Jr. broke the news, initially reporting that Kinberg would continue the Skywalker Saga with Episodes X, XI, and XII. Subsequently, however, Lucasfilm disputed this.

Nevertheless, it looks like another Star Wars trilogy is on the way.
Kinberg Is the Perfect Choice
Kinberg is no stranger to Star Wars, having previously worked with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck to create Star Wars: Rebels. Additionally, he served as a consultant on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The writer and producer is best known, however, for his work in the X-Men franchise, having written and produced numerous films, including The Last Stand, First Class, Days of Future Past, and Logan.

He also produced Deadpool and Deadpool 2 before becoming the executive producer of Deadpool & Wolverine.
How Many ‘Star Wars’ Films Is Lucasfilm Making?!
While Kinberg’s Star Wars trilogy is certainly exciting news, it also raises a number of questions.
Star Wars is currently set to return to theaters in 2026 with The Mandalorian & Grogu. Additionally, Lucasfilm has previously announced three other films — James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi, Dave Filoni’s Heir to the Empire, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey Skywalker film.

On top of that, both Taika Waititi and Shawn Levy are reportedly developing Star Wars feature films, and Donald Glover’s Lando film is still in the works.

That would mean that eight Star Wars films are theoretically in the works, not counting the Levy and Waititi productions.
Trouble For Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey Skywalker Film?
The other big question that arises from the Kinberg news is what, if anything, this means for Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey Skywalker film.

Announced at last year’s Star Wars Celebration, the film will follow Rey Skywalker as she attempts to rebuild the Jedi order. In recent weeks, speculation that the film is in trouble has intensified with the news that another screenwriter has left the project.
If Kinberg’s trilogy is, in fact, Episodes 10-12 and a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, it is hard to see how the new films would coexist with the planned Rey film.

While these questions still need to be answered, a new era of Star Wars history is about to explode. Hopefully, Lucasfilm will clarify its plans soon.
