Jodi Benson Secretly Voiced an Iconic Video Game Character — Twenty Years Later Her Secret Is Out
One of the great mysteries in video game history has finally been solved after Jodi Benson revealed that she is, in fact, the voice actress behind an iconic character in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
Since the action-adventure game was released in 2004, fans have speculated that Benson provided the voice of Eva, the undercover Chinese People’s Liberation Army spy, even though the game’s credits listed Suzetta Minet as the voice actress.
With the upcoming release of the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, Benson finally revealed her identity.
Why Benson Hid Her Identity
In a new interview promoting the upcoming remake, Benson explained her decision to remain anonymous.
“The various projects that I am affiliated with in my career are sort of family-based, children-based,” said Benson. “It was actually Kris Zimmerman Salter–our [voice] director–she kind of sat down with me and she was like, ‘Maybe we need to change your name.'”
As it turns out, Benson had a childhood dog named Suzette Monet. Thus, her alias was born.
A Disney Legend
As Benson notes, the actress remains best known for providing the voice of Ariel in 1989’s The Little Mermaid, a role she has reprised numerous times over the succeeding decades. In addition to Ariel, Benson also provided the voice of Barbie in the Toy Story franchise, Helen of Troy in Hercules, and Weebo in Flubber.
In 2011, Benson was named a Disney Legend.
Twenty years after Metal Gear Solid 3 was released, fans can finally confirm their suspicions: Jodi Benson is Eve.
