Storytelling Window Featuring Ichabod Crane in Magic Kingdom
Disney Imagineers have once again found a way to sprinkle extra magic into the Magic Kingdom! Introducing the Storytelling Window above the Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe in Liberty Square, the first of its kind. This enchanting window display showcases none other than Ichabod Crane from Disney’s The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, bringing an unexpected Disney touch to Liberty Square.
Debuting in summer 2024, the Storytelling Window offers guests a whimsical peek into Ichabod’s world. Every so often, guests strolling by might notice Ichabod enjoying a snack, sipping tea, or diving into a good book. The iconic silhouette of this quirky character has delighted guests and sparked wonder, especially for Disney fans who cherish the classic character.
The Inspiration Behind the Window
Imagineers dreamed up the idea for Storytelling Windows many years ago. Walking down Main Street, one Imagineer looked up at the second-floor windows and imagined characters bringing life to those overlooked spaces. After testing several technologies to create a convincing effect, Imagineers developed a setup with two monitors mounted behind the window to create subtle, animated scenes.
What makes this window so magical is its simplicity. “We created six different scenes for Ichabod, each with subtle movements and interactions,” one Imagineer explained. “He isn’t up all the time, but he appears just enough to surprise and delight guests.”
Building the Magic with a Talented Team
The window project was a collaborative effort, bringing together Imagineers and cast members from various departments. The installation took place on the eve of July 4th, and Imagineers fondly remember setting up Ichabod’s scenes with patriotic music playing around them. “Whenever I look at Ichabod now, I think of Stars and Stripes Forever,” one team member laughed. Despite the unusual background soundtrack, they were able to finish just in time to bring Ichabod to life for guests.
One Imagineer shared a touching memory of watching guests experience the Storytelling Window for the first time. “I was out here one night, and I saw a little boy tug on his mom’s arm, pointing up at the window saying, ‘Look, Mom, it’s Ichabod!’ He couldn’t have been more than 10, and it was so special to see him recognize this classic character. Moments like that remind us of why we do what we do.”
A Touch of Disney Magic, Subtle and Surprising
The Storytelling Window in Liberty Square doesn’t demand attention or overpower the space. Instead, it adds a layer of discovery for those who happen to glance up at just the right time. The familiar face of Ichabod Crane draws guests into the world of classic Disney storytelling and adds an unexpected delight to their visit.
Guests and Imagineers alike hope that this will be the first of many Storytelling Windows around the park. Imagine the endless possibilities: beloved characters popping up in windows, silently sharing moments with guests who look up at just the right time.
If you’re visiting the Magic Kingdom, be sure to keep an eye on the second floor of the Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe—Ichabod Crane might be up there, enjoying a quiet moment or reading his favorite book. These small surprises make every visit to Disney a little more magical.
