‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ 2: The Sequel That Might Never Be
Disney fans have long wondered if Roger Rabbit and Jessica Rabbit will ever grace the big screen again in a sequel to the iconic 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Unfortunately, according to director Robert Zemeckis, a sequel may never happen—and Jessica Rabbit may be part of the reason why.
In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Zemeckis revealed that Disney has a completed script for Roger Rabbit 2, written by the original screenwriters Peter S. Seamen and Jeffrey Price. However, he believes that “the current Disney would never make Roger Rabbit today.” The issue, he explained, is Jessica Rabbit herself.
The sultry, glamorous cartoon character was originally created to push the boundaries of animation, and while she’s beloved by fans, her style might clash with today’s Disney standards. “Look what they did to Jessica at the theme park,” Zemeckis noted, referring to the recent update that dressed the character in a trench coat, minimizing her previously provocative look.

For Disney fans, this news may come as a disappointment, especially given the film’s popularity. Who Framed Roger Rabbit, a groundbreaking blend of live-action and animation, brought to life the wild world of Toontown, where animated characters and humans interact.
Zemeckis reflected on how Disney’s culture in the late 1980s allowed for this unique project to come to life. “We made Roger Rabbit right at a time when Disney was ready to rebuild itself,” he shared. “They wanted to do something bold.

I kept saying, and I sincerely believe this, ‘I’m making Roger Rabbit the way I believe Walt Disney would have made it.’ Walt Disney didn’t make movies for children—he made them for everyone.” The film embraced a sophisticated, somewhat edgy tone that resonated with audiences of all ages.
The allure of Roger Rabbit has inspired fans to dream of a follow-up for decades. At various points, industry giants like J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg expressed interest in a sequel, and in 2016, Zemeckis himself described a potential storyline for Roger Rabbit 2.

This sequel would have been set in the 1950s, evolving the noir style of the original film. However, despite a “magnificent” script, Zemeckis admitted that “the current corporate Disney culture has no interest in Roger, and they certainly don’t like Jessica at all.”
While Who Framed Roger Rabbit may stand alone for the foreseeable future, its legacy remains strong in Disney history. Fans continue to celebrate its bold storytelling, memorable characters, and technical innovation. As Disney continues to evolve, it’s unclear if Roger Rabbit will ever get the chance to return to the screen, but one thing is certain: this film’s impact on the world of animation and live-action cinema will not be forgotten.
