Another Permit Has Been Filed For the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Refurbishment — Here’s What We Learned
After months of speculation, Walt Disney World announced earlier this month that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad would be closing for a lengthy refurbishment.
The fan-favorite Frontierland attraction will officially close on January 6, 2025, and will remain shuttered until 2026.
So far, Disney has provided few details on the new project, only noting that “The attraction will reopen with a little bit of new magic in 2026.” The prevailing theory, however, is that the Disney World version of Thunder Mountain will get the long-awaited dynamite effect used in other versions of the attraction around the world.
While we will have to wait until the attraction re-opens to know for sure, fans are understandably excited.
When Will the Attraction Reopen?
Speaking of Big Thunder Mountain’s reopening date, Disney has yet to officially give one. While we know that the attraction will remain closed through next year, there has been no official word on when it reopens.
However, a new permit filed by Walt Disney World today could shed some light on when we will see the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness up and running again.
Unfortunately, the new notice of commencement permit filed with Orange County does not give us any insight into the work being done. It simply lists the general description of improvement as “general construction.”
What it does tell us, however, is that DPR Construction will do the work and, more importantly, that the permit will expire on March 13, 2026.
While that does not necessarily mean that the attraction’s refurbishment will be completed by then, it could give us a ballpark idea of what to expect.
Hopefully, as we get closer to the closure of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, we hear more soon.
