Disney Forced to Cancel TV Crime Series Set in Italy
Disney was recently forced to cancel the release of a brand new TV crime series set in a small town in Italy.
The mayor of the local town complained to local courts that the show was giving his location a bad name.

Avetrena- This is Not Hollywood is a fictionalized retelling of the 2010 murder of a 15-year-old girl by family members and recounts the media frenzy that surrounded the case. The series was due to premier on October 25 on Disney+.
Series Postponed
Disney recently shared in a joint statement with producers Groenlandia that the series is postponed following a court order in Taranto, Italy and that the decision would be challenged.
The court accepted an appeal from Mayor Antonio Lazzi suspending the series this past Wednesday. However, a November 5th hearing is scheduled to adjudicate more fully.
Avetrana, Italy
The small town of Avetrana has less than 7000 residents and is located in the Puglia region of Italy’s deep south. Mayor Lazzi has taken legal action as a result of his community growing tired of the consistent association with the gruesome murder over the years.
They have further requested the TV series to change its name to avoid further association with the town, the crime, and the mafia-style code of silence depicted with the crime.

The Italian Producer’s association APA and the country’s film and television industry group ANICA have pushed back criticizing the court decision and stating it is setting a dangerous precedent against artistic freedom.
