‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Takes Down ‘Barbie’; Is Now the 12th-Highest Grossing Film of All Time at the Domestic Box Office
After 13 weekends in theaters, Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine surpassed last year’s Barbie at the domestic box office to become the 12th highest-grossing movie ever.
Already the highest-grossing R-rated film ever, Deadpool & Wolverine has continued to trudge ahead in theaters and climb up the all-time rankings. This weekend, the Shawn Levy-directed film increased its domestic gross to $636.3 million, enough to claw past the juggernaut that was Barbie.
According to Box Office Mojo, the latest Marvel blockbuster achieved the feat in just 87 days. Barbie, meanwhile, took 185 days to reach its final total of $636.2 million.
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Continues to Impress
Perhaps more impressively, however, is the fact that Deadpool & Wolverine has managed to reach these heights as an R-rated film. Globally, the film has now grossed over $1.33 billion. The success of the latest MCU entry is truly unprecedented.
Notably, Deadpool & Wolverine is also now available on digital platforms, meaning audiences are still going to theaters to watch the film even though they can watch it at home. As the film passed Barbie in theaters, it also delivered the highest-selling first week ever for an R-rated film on domestic digital platforms.
After a difficult 2023, this year has been a triumphant return to form for Disney at the box office. Not only had Deadpool & Wolverine restored Marvel Studios’ lost luster, but Pixar’s Inside Out 2 became the highest-grossing animated film of all time, earning over $1.69 billion in theaters.
With Moana 2 set to sail into theaters this Thanksgiving, Disney will look to keep its record-breaking year going.
