How ‘Alien: Romulus’ Broke New Ground in Sustainable Filmmaking
Not only did 20th Century Studios’ Alien: Romulus top the box office while breathing new life into the Alien franchise, but it also blazed a new trail in sustainable filmmaking.
As part of The Walt Disney Company’s efforts to create more sustainable productions, the Alien: Romulus production crew used a dedicated sustainability department led by Green Eyes Consultancy to reduce their environmental impact. The team used innovative set construction materials, recycling and composting programs, and advanced technologies to reduce fuel use and emissions.

Here is a closer look at the film production team’s techniques.
Using Recycled Material
Alien: Romulus was the first tentpole feature film to utilize sets constructed from recycled cardboard case material.

While the sets still performed like traditional wood sets, meaning they could be painted, machined, and structurally sound, the materials could also be recycled. So, the materials that were once part of the Alien: Romulus sets will now be made into new sets!
Procuring Renewable Energy
To bring Alien: Romulus to life, the production crew worked with Origo Studios to procure 100% renewable energy for all electricity used in filming. This was the first Disney production to do so at a leased studio!

Additionally, emissions were reduced through electric vehicles, LED set lighting, and smart power management systems.
Prioritizing Waste Sorting
To reduce the amount of waste going to landfills, the production crew prioritized waste sorting, where materials were separated based on their materials and recyclability. In total, the crew diverted nearly 3,839 pounds of material!

Finally, a weekly newsletter explained the importance of waste sorting, leading to a significant decrease in the amount of waste going to landfills.
“This is the first film where I actually noticed [sustainability]. I’ve noticed people doing their part,” Tom Moran, Executive Producer, said. “It’s more challenging, but I would love to live up to that challenge.”

The success of Alien: Romulus‘ sustainability efforts will inspire future Disney productions as the company continues to make progress in addressing collective impacts.
