Walt Disney World’s Affordable Housing Project Receives Final Approval
Disney is taking significant steps to address the affordable housing situation in Central Florida.
Earlier this year, the company proposed building 1,400 units of mixed-income housing off Hartzog Road in the rapidly growing Horizon West community, just outside Walt Disney World.
The Disney plan provides much-needed affordable housing in the area, but local residents expressed concern and resistance to moving forward.
Walt Disney World’s Affordable Housing Project was voted on and received final approval.
Final Vote
Yesterday, on October 8th, Orange County commissioners made the final vote on the affordable housing project in Horizon West.
In March 2024, commissioners voted 4-2 to transmit the plans for review by state agencies, resulting in the addition of a stoplight at Avalon Road and additional crosswalks. The total number of planned units was also dropped from 1,410 to 1,369.
The updated plans were approved by the county’s Planning & Zoning Commission in a 5-1 vote at a meeting on September 19th, during which county reps confirmed that October would be the final vote on the issue.
