Tropical Storm Milton Officially Gains Hurricane Status
Hurricane Milton has officially formed and is heading towards Florida.
Tropical Storm Milton grew more powerful in the last few hours in the Gulf of Mexico and is currently on track to impact the Florida peninsula.
This comes shortly after Hurricane Helene, where many areas were impacted and are still recovering from the devastating storm.
Weather Update
Milton’s sustained winds have reached 80 mph and are expected to steadily and rapidly gain strength over the next few days. The hurricane can possibly reach the coast as a major hurricane sometime Wednesday.
The National Hurricane Center defines a major hurricane as at least a “category three storm” with winds of 111 to 129 mph and devastating damage.
State of Emergency
Today, Governor Ron DeSantis expanded the state of emergency to include 51 out of Florida’s 67 counties. “A major hurricane is the most likely outcome,” DeSantis said. “This is not a good track for the state of Florida.”
Florida is already feeling the effects of storms and rain. There is concern of widespread minor to moderate river flooding in portions of the Florida peninsula and the Keys.
It is still uncertain about Milton’s intensity and the exact track. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm could move in either direction, hitting Florida as a major hurricane or possibly weakening.
The NHC warned earlier today that regardless of details, there is growing confidence that a powerful hurricane, to some degree, will be impacting parts of Florida.
