Tropical Storm Milton Heading to Florida as Category 3 Hurricane This Week
The National Hurricane Center confirmed this morning that Tropical Storm Milton is strengthening and will intensify into a category three hurricane when it hits Florida this coming Wednesday.
This news comes as Florida and various parts of the US are still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Helene.
Category 3 Hurricane
NHC senior hurricane specialist Jack Beven shared:
Steady to rapid strengthening is forecast during the next few days. Milton is forecast to become a hurricane later today, and it could become a major hurricane while it moves across the central and eastern Gulf of Mexico.
As of 8 AM Sunday morning, Tropical Storm Milton has sustained winds of 60 mph and is moving east at 5 mph. It is presently located about 860 miles west-southwest of Tampa and 345 miles west-northwest of Progresso, Mexico.
The NHC has also confirmed that the risk of “life-threatening impacts” is increasing for Florida’s West Coast.
Tropical Storm Milton is intensifying quickly. A tropical storm watch was issued for multiple locations in Mexico, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a state of emergency for 35 counties.
Tropical Storm Milton is forecast to become a hurricane by Sunday night or early Monday morning. It is predicted to be a major hurricane by Tuesday night with 120 mph winds and gusts of 150 mph.
Regional hurricane models continue to show an aggressive and intensifying Milton. The five-day cone of uncertainty ranges from Naples through Big Bend, with the forecast center potentially near Tampa Bay. The predicted track has Miltom moving across Orlando and Central Florida.
Predicting the storm intensity at this time is complicated, but the situation is being monitored closely.
