Orange County Votes on Disney Affordable Housing Project
Disney is taking significant steps to address the affordable housing situation in Central Florida.
The company proposed building 1,400 units of mixed-income housing off Hartzog Road in the rapidly growing Horizon West community, just outside Walt Disney World.
The Disney plan provides much-needed affordable housing in the area, but local residents raised concerns earlier this year about traffic and safety.
Orange County commissioners will make the final vote on the affordable housing project in Horizon West on October 8th.
Final Vote
In March 2024, commissioners voted 4-2 to transmit the plans for review by state agencies.
A traffic study led to the addition of a stoplight at Avalon Road and additional crosswalks. Because of concerns about traffic and crowds from local residents, the total number of planned units also has dropped from 1,410 to 1,369.
Avery Maehrer, a spokesman for Disney, shared with the Orlando Business Journal the company’s goal for collaboration with the community while providing affordable housing.
Our goal remains to help solve and contribute to what Orange County leaders have identified as one of the top issues in our region. We look forward to returning to the board of county commissioners and presenting this unique plan to bring more than 1,000 affordable housing units to Central Florida.
The updated plans were approved by the county’s Planning & Zoning Commission in a 5-1 vote at a meeting on September 19th. County reps confirmed that this would be the final vote on the issue.
