Giancarlo Esposito Teases that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni Have a “New Vision” For the Future of ‘Star Wars’
With the Mandalorian leaving behind Disney+ for the big screen and The Acolyte canceled after just one season, the future of Star Wars on streaming looks muddled.
Later this year, Skeleton Crew will debut, bringing an Amblin-style story and a group of new characters to Disney+. Then, of course, there is Season 2 of Ahsoka and Andor. Based on recent reports, however, Dave Filoni will not have Ahsoka back on screen until 2026. Andor, meanwhile, will end its story after a second season next year.
Looking at the franchise’s upcoming theatrical releases, outside of the aforementioned Mandalorian & Grogu, Lucasfilm has also announced that Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey Skywalker for a post-Rise of Skywalker film. That movie, however, will not be a fourth trilogy but a standalone film (at least for now).
Additionally, there is James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi film, which will explore the origins of the Force, and Dave Filoni’s Heir the Empire project, which will bring together the heroes of the New Republic.
While Star Wars is not bereft of upcoming content, the franchise’s narrative seems disparate and scattered.
A New Vision?
During a recent appearance at Dragon Con last week, The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito was asked about the fragmented state of the current Star Wars story. Interstingly, Espositio shared his belief that the galaxy will soon come together.
“As in the MCU…Disney will figure out how to join all of these characters into one really great movie or TV show. That’s my sense of where it will go,” Giancarlo Esposito mused. “Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau have a new vision, continuing on with a Mandalorian movie…My sense is that it’s all going to converge at one point or another and we’re going to have another set of… [a] trilogy, or more, of films.”
While it seems likely that Din Djarin, Grogu, Ahsoka, and perhaps the cast of Skeleton Crew will soon come together for Dave Filoni’s Thrawn movie, how Star Wars uses these characters to propel the franchise forward remains to be seen.
Star Wars Needs a New Meta-Narrative
Outside of the Rey Skywalker film, the rest of Star Wars‘ current projects are capped by stories that have already been told. While Lucasfilm has laid a foundation of popular characters, it needs an over-arching narrative to propel the franchise forward.
Hopefully, we will learn more soon.
