Could Another Hurricane be Heading Towards Florida?
It has been a little over a week since Hurricane Helene officially intensified into a category 4 hurricane, impacting Florida and devasting parts of the U.S.
Now, Central Florida is once again watching the news and bracing itself as the National Hurricane Center warns of a potential new tropical storm.
Tropical Storm Milton
The National Hurricane Center is warning of a new tropical storm that could target Florida as a hurricane. Tropical Storm Milton could potentially hit Florida as a hurricane next week.
Earlier today, the NHC provided an important update on Tropical Depression 14, which has grown to become a tropical storm.
The storm currently has 40 mph winds and is moving north-northeast at 3 mph, about 220 miles northeast of Veracruz, Mexico, and 365 miles west-northwest of Progresso, Mexico.
Tropical Storm Milton is in an environmental area of low vertical winds and warm sea surface temperatures that can allow for the storm to rapidly strengthen.
The NHC warned that the storm could potentially affect the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico before impacting the Florida Peninsula, Florida Keys, and the Bahamas.
The storm is expected to move slowly for the next 24 hours and then pick up momentum on Monday or Tuesday.
The forecast cone has the center about 75 miles west of Tampa Bay by Wednesday morning and as a category two hurricane, but could potentially get stronger and be a category three storm.
The concern is once again, storm surges, strong winds, flooding, and intense rain.
Although the details and conditions are still forming, weather forecasters and meteorologists are encouraging everyone to have a hurricane plan in place.
Regardless of the specifics, an intense hurricane with multiple life-threatening hazards is likely to affect Florida’s west coast by next week.
