Disney Purges Dozens of Titles From Disney+ and Hulu
As the Walt Disney Company’s fiscal year draws to an end this September, Disney+ subscribers have found more of their favorite shows and movies purged from the streaming service.
Just days after the Disney Branded Television animated series Hailey’s On It! was removed from Disney+, fans began to notice dozens of other titles were no longer available.
Perhaps most noticeably, Disney Channel series Pretty Freekin Scary and Saturdays have both been removed from Disney+ just eighteen months after coming to an end.
While neither show had proven to be particularly popular, they were major releases from Disney.
‘Togo’
Also purged from the Disney+ library was the critically acclaimed Togo.
The film told the story of Leonhard Seppala and his titular sled dog, who heroically led the 1925 serum run to Nome.
Hulu Removes Dozens of Titles
Finally, in addition to the Disney+ titles, dozens of titles from Hulu have also disappeared. These include:
- Genius MLX/X
- Top Ten: 80’s
- Living For the Dead
- Love & WWE: Bianca & Montez
- Love in Fairhope
- Superhot: The Spicy World of Pepper People
- Science Fair: The Series
- Farm Dreams
- Home in the Wild
- Never Say Never with Jeff Jenkins
- Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks Showdown
- Freeks
- Going Fur Gold
- Locked Up: Abroad
- Saturdays
- Cesar Millan: Better Human Better Dog
- Narco Wars
- America’s Funniest Home Videos: Animal Edition
- The Biggest Little Farm: The Return
Disney’s Fiscal Year Ends Today
As previously mentioned, the latest content purge has occurred in the final days of The Walt Disney Company’s fiscal year, which ends on September 30.
With Wall Street hyperfocused on profitability in streaming, the purged titles were likely removed to write off the assets and improve the streaming division’s bottom line.
A New Streaming Strategy
After years of releasing content at a breathtaking rate to grow its subscriber count, Disney shifted gears last year.
On May 10, 2023, then-Disney CFO Christine McCarthy publicly announced that, as part of the company’s new streaming strategy, Disney was in the process of “reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation and will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms.”
Since then, hundreds of titles have been removed from Disney’s streaming services as profitability became the ultimate goal.
Unfortunately, this will not be the last time that Disney removes content from Disney+ and Hulu.
