Pixar Announces Release Dates For Upcoming Disney+ Series ‘Dream Productions’ and ‘Win or Lose’
Pixar is finally set to make its long-awaited television debut on December 11, 2024, when Dream Productions premieres on Disney+.
A spinoff of Inside Out, the upcoming streaming series will take audiences back into Riley’s mind, where they will learn how the young girl’s dreams are made.
Dream Productions will feature Amy Poehler (Joy), Kensington Tallman (Riley), Liza Lapira (Disguest), Tony Hale (Fear), Lewis Black (Anger), and Phyllis Smith (Sadness) reprising their Inside Out 2 roles.
“Riley is growing up and when her memories need some extra processing, Joy and the rest of the Core Emotions send them to Dream Productions,” the show’s synopsis reads.
“Acclaimed director Paula Persimmon (voice of Paula Pell) faces a nightmare of her own: Trying to create the next hit dream after being paired up with Xeni (voice of Richard Ayoade), a smug daydream director looking to step up into the big leagues of night dreams.”
A Change of Plans For Pixar
Interestingly, when Pete Docter initially announced Dream Productions, the Pixar chief creative officer said that the series would debut next spring.
“Remember we go to Dream Production to see how Riley’s dreams are made? It semi-explains why they’re so weird,” he explained. “We’ve continued the exploration of the power of dreams and how they affect us in our waking life, as well. So it’s pretty cool.”
With the historic success of Inside Out 2, however, Disney likely wants to release the series as soon as possible.
‘Win or Lose’
Pixar originally planned on making Win or Lose their first long-form animated series. Originally announced in December 2020, the series has been a long time coming.
Win or Lose will follow the story of the Pickles, a co-ed middle school softball team, and the events leading up to their championship game.
“The series reveals what it actually feels like to be in the shoes of each character — the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, even a lovesick umpire — with incredibly funny, very emotional and uniquely animated perspectives,” Pixar teased.
Earlier this year, Pixar announced that Win or Lose would debut on Disney+ on December 6. That, however, will no longer be the case.
With Dream Productions now scheduled for a December release, Win or Lose has been pushed back to February 19, 2025.
Will Pixar Make More Streaming Series?
Previewing the upcoming series, Docter teased that fans are in for a treat.
“These two series really show Pixar creativity at its finest,” said Pete Docter, chief creative officer at Pixar. “We’re excited fans won’t have to wait long for more great content from the world of ‘Inside Out.’ ‘Dream Productions’ offers up a treasure trove of jokes and fun as it digs deeper into one of our favorite parts of the first film, the making of Riley’s dreams. And we consider ‘Win or Lose’ a major, first-of-its-kind tentpole series. One that really showcases what I think makes our studio great. Bold, imaginative storytelling; laugh-out-loud humor; and characters that we can all relate to.”
Despite Pixar’s previous proclamations that it was done making content for Disney+, the studio may still make a serious foray into television.
Should Dream Productions and Win or Lose prove successful, it is hard to see a world where Disney+ does not ask for more series from the studio. Prior to the release of Inside Out 2, Docter and other Pixar executives were adamant that their focus was on theatrical films. Now that the studio has delivered the biggest animated film of all time, it remains to be seen whether they are willing to branch out again.
