Disney After Dark: Best Nighttime Rides
Every second of a Walt Disney World theme park visit is memorable.
You never know when something unforgettable will occur, leaving an indelible impression on you and your family.
Still, I think we can all agree that Disney grows even more magical at night.
Imagineers have created a radiant backdrop throughout the parks.
Your surroundings are so beautiful that they’re almost dreamlike, and several Disney attractions enhance this hypnotic effect.
Here are the best Disney rides to experience at night.
Alien Swirling Saucers
Our criteria here isn’t to identify the best rides at Disney. We all know what those are, and I recently offered my thoughts on Magic Kingdom.
Instead, we’re evaluating the ones that come to life at night, the ones that receive assistance from their illumination and views.
Based on these criteria, you can understand why Alien Swirling Saucers earns a spot on the list. Just look at it!
The vibrant backdrop creates an almost mystical quality, while the lightning is arguably the best Disney has done to date.
Also, Alien Swirling Saucers is even better during the holiday season when it switches to holiday music and theming.
Astro Orbiter
This list reflects the past, the present, and the future of Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom.
I say this because Astro Orbiter and its predecessor, Star Jets, were once the centerpiece of the Tomorrowland skyline.
As you know, that’s no longer the case, at least not since early 2023.
Still, this rocket ride provides a mesmerizing view of Disney after dark, and its sci-fi glow would be the envy of Arthur C. Clarke.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Two of the attractions on this list are rides I prioritize every night I spend at Magic Kingdom.
These attractions provide the best combination of nighttime park views and enjoyment, at least for my family.
On Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, a couple of spots provide a brief glimpse of Cinderella Castle. I always look.
There’s also a recurring theme on several of these attractions.
Sometimes, when you’re lucky, you’ll ride just as the fireworks presentation begins. That’s as visually stunning as Disney gets.
Just close your eyes and imagine being on this rollercoaster while fireworks explode in the sky. It makes you want to book a trip, doesn’t it?
Expedition Everest
While the other parks offer several notable outdoor attractions, only two of them earned a spot on this list.
Even my beloved Kilimanjaro Safaris wasn’t an ideal fit since it can be hit-or-miss at night, when many animals are sleeping.
Meanwhile, most of EPCOT’s attractions are indoors, which means they’re the same throughout the day.
So, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios only earn one spot on the list each.
At Animal Kingdom, the one attraction that elevates at night is Expedition Everest, and you can understand why.
During the build-up at the start of the roller coaster, you ascend to the highest point at Animal Kingdom.
While you’ll face an obstructed view at times, the rise up the Forbidden Mountain is absolutely breathtaking.
Notably, this one is gorgeous to watch at night even when you’re not on the ride. But it’s absolutely enchanting when you are.
Liberty Square Riverboat
Disney sells a dessert fireworks party, and it’s a terrific experience everyone should try once.
However, there’s a free version of the same concept available every night at Magic Kingdom.
You can board the Liberty Square Riverboat right before the show begins.
Then, you can enjoy the simultaneous experiences of being on a boat AND watching Happily Ever After. It’s breathtaking…and free!
Mad Tea Party
Long before Alien Swirling Saucers opened, Magic Kingdom offered a similar experience.
Mad Tea Party is an outdoor/indoor attraction, which is to say it’s not walled in, but it is covered.
So, you’re (relatively) safe from the elements, but you can still look outside and watch the fireworks.
Also, Imagineers have added all sorts of lighting to make it much shinier at night.
You can see Mad Tea Party long before you arrive at the line queue, as it literally glows in the dark.
While I fully understand why you might not want to end your evening with a ride on Mad Tea Party, it’s a stunningly beautiful experience.
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
I think this list demonstrates that I believe Magic Kingdom changes the most at night.
Of course, you know this the moment you walk on Main Street, U.S.A, but it’s especially true on certain rides.
A few years ago, I had the epiphany that Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is my favorite place to be around fireworks time.
That’s because the attraction area provides a unique perspective of Happily Ever After, something I discovered by accident one night.
While there’s again some obstructed viewing, you can roam around New Fantasyland to find the perfect unoccupied spot.
Then, you can watch what I call the backside of fireworks. It largely looks the same, but the inverted view is a bit odd.
By the way, it’s extraordinarily difficult to time right. When things go just right, you can glimpse the show while on the ride!
Even trying to wait to board until the show begins is an imperfect strategy here, though.
Since part of the roller coaster occurs indoors, you need to get lucky. It’s a very short ride, after all.
Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover
Conversely, the best slow ride at night is unquestionably the PeopleMover, something I mention frequently.
Since this ride typically takes 11 minutes or so, you’ll spy across Tomorrowland and toward Cinderella Castle.
In the process, you’ll appreciate two of the most wondrous sights in Tomorrowland, Astro Orbiter and the one we’ll discuss next.
The difference is that you’re not spinning around in a circle or zooming down a roller coaster track.
Instead, you’re casually gliding through the upper levels of Tomorrowland.
You’ve got time to kick back, relax, and savor the splendor of your illuminated surroundings.
TRON Lightcycle / Run
Finally, we have the newest addition at Tomorrowland, and it’s the attraction that has become the focus of the modernized skyline.
TRON Lightcycle / Run has reinvented and reinvigorated Tomorrowland, a desperately needed step for the “futuristic” themed land.
We all know Tomorrowland hadn’t been that for a while. Then, TRON added its unique exterior facility and digital effects.
Suddenly, Tomorrowland radiates with a new energy, attracting a new generation of fans to admire the shiny objects. Hey, we all do it.
Even those who aren’t easily distracted often lose their train of thought when gazing upon TRON’s canopy. It’s majestic.
For previous generations of fans, Astro Orbiter defined Tomorrowland. From now on, it’s TRON.
Of course, diehard Disney fans are gonna pass both and head straight to the PeopleMover because it’s what we do.
