Hulu Makes the First Big Purchase of the Toronto Film Festival With ‘Nutcrackers’
Shortly after this year’s Toronto Film Festival kicked off, Hulu made the first big acquisition of the event.
According to a new report from Deadline, the Disney-owned streamer is close to finalizing an eight-figure deal to acquire Nutcrackers.
Directed by David Gordon Green, Nutcrackers stars Ben Stiller, Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, and Tim Heidecker. The film was chosen to kick off this week’s film festival and recieved rave reviews.
Introducing ‘Nutcrackers’
Nutcrackers tells the story of Michael Maxwell (Stiller), a workaholic from the city who is forced to move to rural Ohio to take care of his late sister’s children.
With Christmas just around the corner, Michael initially sets out to find adoptive parents for the children. Much to his surprise, Maxwell learns that the four boys (played by real-life siblings Homer, Ulysses, Atlas, and Arlo Janson) have a talent for ballet. Eventually something inside Maxwell begins to change, and he decides that Ohio is where he belongs.
Art Imitates Life
While Nutcrackers grabbed headlines for marking Stiller’s return to acting after a seven-year hiatus, the story is really about the Janson children.
Green was inspired to create the film based on the children’s real lives, after being famiily friends with their mom for years. Nutcrackers was even then shot in the Janson’s house and dance studio.
It is unclear when Nutcrackers will debut on Hulu. Hopefully, however, we will learn more once the deal is finalized.
