Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow Are Set to Come Together in ‘The Old Man’ Season 2
After the first season of FX’s The Old Man introduced Hollywood legends Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow as CIA agent Dan Chase and FBI Assistant Director Harold Harper, the two actors will finally get some screen time together in season two.
Debuting tonight on FX, Season 2 of The Old Man will see Chase and Harper team up to recover Emily Chase (Alia Shawkat), a kidnapped woman they call “daughter.”
Reflecting on Season 1, Lithgow called his lack of screen time with Bridges a “terrific frustration.”
Luckily, the two actors will now finally get to team up.
“We had a ball,” Bridges added.
Building on Season 1
According to The Old Man co-creator Jonathan E. Steinberg, Season 2 of The Old Man will build on the foundation of the first season.
“As much as you guys wanted to work together, we wanted to see you together,” he explained. “I think there’s a promise in the first season that it’s coming. In a way, it’s driving the show in the sense of what’s going to happen when these two guys are together. And it turns out it’s pretty great.”
To tell The Old Man’s story, the cast was given the luxury of being able to rehearse. Interestingly, however, Bridges brought his background in screen acting to rehearsals, whereas Lithgow grew up on the stage.
“In a way, just the fact that I’m much more a theater actor who’s had to tone it down to work in front of a camera, and Jeff has a long, long history… acting in front of a camera. I think it’s a very interesting combination,” Lithgow said.
According to executive producer Dan Shotz, seeing Bridges and Lithgow work their magic was something to behold.
“Watching these two guys explore these roles, these moments…they take the time to just want to make it special,” he said.
“They want to take the time to see all the possibilities, and then keep tweaking it and keep trying, and that is what is remarkable about watching them work together.”
The Old Men
While Bridges and Lithgow come from different backgrounds, they both agree on one — it is easy for them to embody the title of their show.
“I’m an old man; I don’t have to play it,” Bridges explained. “I mean, I bring that to the party without any trouble.”
“I’ve sort of entered into my old man chapter, and it’s been very exciting,” Lithgow added.
Season 2 of The Old Man premieres September 12th at 10PM ET on FX and begins streaming on September 13th on Hulu.
