A Young Adult Adaptation of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ Is Coming to Disney+
Following the success of Goosebumps and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Disney+ is continuing to invest in Young Adult content.
According to Deadline, Disney is developing Phantom, a Young Adult reimagination of Gaston Leroux’s classic novel The Phantom of the Opera. The film will be produced by Disney Branded Entertainment and Kenny Ortega, who previously collaborated on the High School Musical, Cheetah Girls, and Descendants franchises.

Ortega, who was named a Disney Legend in 2019, has just finished a deal with Netflix. Based on the legendary choreographer’s involvement, Phantom seems likely to feature plenty of musical numbers.
‘Phantom’ Could Launch a Franchise
While Phantom is currently being conceived as a stand-alone movie, Disney is reportedly open to creating a franchise around it should it prove popular.

While Disney has yet to announce a release date for Phantom, we know that Giovanni M. Porta will write the script based on a story by Porta and Eric Bromberg.
Interestingly, the series is also being executive produced by Exile Content, which is a part of Candle Media. For those who are unaware, Candle Media was founded by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs. The duo has recently returned to Disney as advisors to Bob Iger.

After having trouble finding success outside of its Star Wars and Marvel content, Disney+ seems to have identified Young Adult content as a prime opportunity.
