A ‘Star Wars’ Boba Fett Toy Has Sold For an Astonishing $1.34 Million
An extremely rare Star Wars Boba Fett action figure went up for auction last weekend and sold for a record-breaking $1,342,000.
The toy was originally made in 1979 by Kenner but never made it to market. Only 30 prototypes were produced, of which only three are known to still exist today.
According to Goldin, who held the auction, many Star Wars fans were convinced they once owned the action figure despite the fact that only Kenner employees had access to the prototype.
The “Holy Grail” of Action Figures
Officially known as the Kenner 1979 J-Slot (Version 2) Rocket-Firing (Mailer) Prototype Boba Fett, the figure was never released to stores because the firing rocket posed a risk of injury to children.
Last June, a similar Boba Fett figure became the world’s most expensive vintage toy when it sold for $525,000 in June. That figure had an “L-slot” firing mechanism, however, instead of a “J-Slot.”
“This item is looked at as one of the most important in the hobby,” said Ken Goldin, founder and CEO of Goldin. “This is the first time a Mailer J-Slot V2/ Missile example has come up for auction. Making this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own this iconic piece of the Star Wars franchise.”
A Record-Breaking Sale
By fetching over $1.3 million at auction, the Kenner 1979 J-Slot (Version 2) Rocket-Firing (Mailer) Prototype Boba Fett became the most expensive toy and the most expensive Star Wars item sold that was not a prop.
Bidding on the figure started at $200,000. 25 bids later, the Boba Fett toy was making history.
