‘Alien: Romulus’ Exceeds Expectations as Disney Continues to Dominate the Box Office
The Walt Disney Company once again dominated the box office this weekend, with Alien: Romulus delivering a strong opening weekend.
The latest installment in the Alien franchise delivered a $41.5 million opening weekend in domestic theaters, exceeding expectations. The total marks the second-best opening in the franchise’s history and the highest debut for director Fede Alvarez.
Internationally, the film grossed another $66.7 million for a total of $108.2 million. Alien: Romulus was boosted by stronger-than-expected results in foreign markets, especially China.
Ahead of the film’s release, Alvarez explained that his goal in creating Alien: Romulus was to return the franchise to its horror roots. So far, that strategy has resonated with fans and critics alike.
Disney Continues to Dominate the Box Office
The success of Alien: Romulus is just the latest in a string of hits for Disney, which has seen its box office prospects turn around.
Earlier this year, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes grossed $400 million, kicking off Disney’s 2024 with a bang. Subsequently, Inside Out 2 grossed $1.626 billion on its way to becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Finally, Deadpool & Wolverine (which came in at #2 this weekend) has grossed $1.143 billion and become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever.
In total, Disney has accounted for 42% of the Domestic summer box office and held the #1 spot in 8 of the last 16 weekends.
With Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King still on the horizon, Disney’s box office renaissance could continue through the end of the year.
After a difficult 2023, Disney is once again king of the movie theaters.
