Shawn Levy Gives an Update on His Long-Awaited ‘Star Wars’ Film

Now that Shawn Levy has helped save the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with the wild success of Deadpool & Wolverine, the filmmaker can turn his attention to a galaxy far, far away.

Levy has long been attached to a potential Star Wars film, but the director was adamant that he had to wait until the release of Deadpool & Wolverine (and potentially the final season of Stranger Things) before diving into the project in earnest.

During a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, however, Levy gave an update on his film, describing the King of Star Wars story that he wants to tell.

“The experience of crafting this story has forced me to think about [what Star Wars is],” Levy explained.

“Because there’s only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it’s really forced me – because I don’t want to do a Star Wars movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie.”

Levy Should Be Given Space to Work

From the sound of things, Levy does not want to simply tell a chapter in a larger story; he wants to create a new story in his own corner of the galaxy.

“I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me, both in tone and characters, so I think that there is – there is certainly the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves. And the way that that can make us powerful, those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfillment, that’s Star Wars to me.”

With Star Wars recently exploring the era of the High Republic in The Acolyte and James Mangold’s upcoming set to explore the beginnings of the Force, Levy should have a lot of room to work.

While there is no timetable for when Levy’s film will begin production, hopefully, we get more information soon.
