“Let It Go” Songwriters Receive Diamond Albums at D23: The Ultimate Fan Event
Eleven years after the film first hit theater, Disney’s Frozen continues to break records.
The animated classic has entertained audiences for over a decade, spawning a hit sequel (and another two on the way) and showing a lasting power that is rare these days.
The latest sign that the Frozen phenomenon is showing no signs of slowing down came this past spring when “Let It Go” was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
The song’s new certification marks the first time that a Walt Disney Records release has reached Diamond status!
Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez Get Their Diamond Albums
At last weekend’s D23: The Ultimate Fan Event, Disney Music Group President Ken Bunt was on hand to present two Diamond plaques to “Let it Go” songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.
Originally performed by Idina Menzel, “Let It Go” has become a Disney staple and is easily one of the company’s most popular songs.
In a previous interview with D23, Lopez discussed the meaningful impact that the song has had on people’s lives.
“In the documentary series about Frozen 2, Into the Unknown, there’s a scene where one of the animators shows the directors this letter about ‘Let It Go,’” Lopez recalled. “This girl shared her experience of having been really depressed and thanked Disney for changing her life and being her strength in a moment of need. That got me.”
A Lasting Impact
Menzel echoed Lopez’s statements, noting that the song has changed her career.
“It’s been this incredible gift in my life. What’s so beautiful is that not only does Elsa connect with a young audience, but she gives us all permission to be our greatest selves,” she told American Idol earlier this year.
“And because I get to perform the song over and over, she never goes away. When I’m feeling down or insecure about my own power, she reminds me to harness that. So, it’s really been this constant gift that just keeps on giving.”
Frozen’s Bright Future
Last weekend’s D23: The Ultimate Fan Event was a big one for the Frozen franchise. Over the course of the three days, the company announced that Disney on Broadway’s Frozen is coming to Disney+ in 2025, and Walt Disney Animation Studios previewed Frozen 3 (and hinted at Frozen 4) to fans!
With Elsa, Anna, and Olaf continuing to be some of Disney’s most popular characters, it looks like the Frozen franchise is here to say!
