For the First Time Ever, Disney+ Is Set to Get Exclusive Episodes of ‘The Simpsons’
As The Simpsons gets ready to celebrate its 35th anniversary later this year, the iconic television show is shaking things up.
While Season 36 of the animated series will premiere on Fox this fall, the show’s longtime home network will not be the only place to catch new episodes.
During last weekend’s D23: The Ultimate Fan Event, Disney announced that four new episodes of The Simpsons will exclusively air on Disney+ this series.
Disney Continues to Embrace ‘The Simpsons’
As strange as it may seem to some, The Simpsons has been fully integrated into the Disney brand over time. When the company initially purchased 20th Century Fox, Bob Iger was leery of putting the brand’s more mature content on Disnsey+.
Instead, he made Hulu the home of Disney’s mature content. Even after stepping down as CEO, Iger reportedly fought with Bob Chapek about his decision to put R-rated films on Disney’s flagship streaming service.
With the full integreation of Hulu and Disney+, however, those walls have been torn down.
To that end, Disney+ will celebrate The Simpsons‘ 35th anniversary on December 17 with the release of a Christmas-themed two-part episode titled O Come All Ye Faithful.
Two other episodes, Yellow Planet and The Past and the Furious, will also air exclusively on the Disney streamer. Additionally, in October, a new Simpsons Halloween-themed short will debut on Disney+.
A First For Disney+
While Disney+ has released exclusive shorts over the years, this will be the first time that full episodes were created exclusively for the streamer. In addition, Season 35 (which previously aired on Fox) will hit Disney+ later this year.
Season 35 of The Simpsons will premiere on October 2 on Disney+.
