Auliʻi Cravalho Teases More ‘Moana’: “Stay Tuned, We’re Only Getting Started”
Eight years after the original film hit theaters, audiences will soon be able to catch up with Moana, Maui, and Hei Hei when Moana 2 sails into theaters this November.
Unlike many of Disney’s high-profile sequels, Moana 2 began as a concept for a Disney+ animated series. When it was decided that the project would be released as a feature film, Disney turned to Moana scribe Jared Bush to write the next chapter of the seafarer’s story.
According to Bush (who co-wrote Moana 2 with Dana Ledoux Miller), creating a sequel to popular animated musical was not an easy task.
“There’s not a lot of sequels to musicals. And the reason for that is because in a musical, your main character has a dream, sings about that dream and accomplishes something. We needed to figure out for this movie, what is next for Moana?” he explained.
“It was her trying to understand herself. There was something inside of her that she wasn’t able to be fulfilled. There was this life out there that she wanted to pursue, but she really loved her island. How does she put those things together? So, finding herself was really important. There is still a lot left for her to discover about herself.”
Cravalho Discusses ‘Moana 2’
To pique interest in Moana 2, Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson took to the stage at D23: The Ultimate Fan Event on Saturday night to unveil a new trailer.
Later in the weekend, Cravalho participated in a Moana panel, where she reflected on reprising her role as the young heroine.
“I feel like this film allowed me to tap into parts of myself,” Cravalho said.
As for the future of the franchise, the actress had a simple message for fans.
“Stay tuned, we’re only getting started.”
Moana 2 will sail into theaters on November 27, 2024.
